Train Horn Quiet Zone
Federal rules allow cities to establish a "quiet zone" where trains would not routinely sound their horns at a road crossing. Before a train horn quiet zone can be established, the crossing must be modified to meet federal risk reduction criteria.
The City of Crystal intends to establish a quiet zone at the Douglas Drive and West Broadway crossings of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The required modifications for these crossings involve the installation of medians and prohibition of the following traffic movements:
- Left turns would be prohibited from eastbound 51st Place to northbound West Broadway
- Left turns would be prohibited from southbound Douglas Dr. to eastbound 51st Place
- 51st Place would be closed between Douglas Dr. and Edgewood Ave.
The city's Quiet Zone Application was approved by the Federal Railroad Administration on Aug. 10, 2017. Construction is anticipated in October 2017, and the train horn quiet zone would be in effect by the end of November 2017.
